A rebuilt brick boundary wall, a herringbone limestone path and low-maintenance gravel beds — all done together for a tired front garden
When we first looked at the front garden on this terraced street in Portslade, it was a patch of old membrane, rubble and a wall that was coming apart. We took the existing brickwork down, cleaned the usable bricks and sourced new ones to match the original colour and texture. The wall went back up with brick piers topped by stone coping slabs, so it reads as part of the house rather than an obvious patch.
From the gate to the front door we laid a herringbone pattern in limestone. A plain slab path would have been the easy choice, but the herringbone adds interest in a narrow space and lifts the whole front garden. We put down a new landscaping membrane and covered it with decorative stone for beds that stay tidy with little upkeep — and the cordyline, phormium and ornamental grasses that were already there were lifted, kept and replanted, so the garden keeps its mature planting instead of starting from scratch.
